The DOMNIQ Group presents Philip Glass’s Águas da Amazônia in a new interpretation, surrounded by new compositions and sound worlds.

Originally written in 1999 for the Brazilian ensemble Uakti, Glass’s 45-minute masterpiece is now revisited in a brand-new transcription created in collaboration with the composer himself.

Led by Dutch Music Prize winner DOMNIQ (Dominique Vleeshouwers), the ensemble of three percussionists, a flutist, and a string player expands the work into an evening-length experience. Around Águas da Amazônia, they build a musical universe inspired by water – blending innovative percussion, self-built instruments like the slapaphone, electronics, light design, and traditional instruments from different cultures.

All That Lingers invites us to rediscover our relationship with water – what lingers, what echoes, when the spring runs dry and the stream falls silent?

Águas da Amazônia

and beyond

At its core is Philip Glass’ Águas da Amazônia. Yet the project goes beyond: a reflection on our relationship with water, expanded by new works and sonic explorations. More than just one piece, it is a living, adaptable program.

A note from DOMNIQ

Exploring Water with Águas da Amazônia

I’m fascinated by water – its movement, its memory, and the way it connects us to the world. This curiosity is at the heart of All That Lingers, a project built around Philip Glass’s incredible work Águas da Amazônia. Originally composed in 1999 for the Brazilian ensemble Uakti, the piece already gives percussion a central role and creates an amazing sonic universe. For our interpretation, we stay close to the original, but we also expand it, exploring our own sound world with traditional instruments, acoustic instruments, electronics, and self-built creations.

We’ve brought instruments from all over: a balafon from Burkina Faso, flutes we’ve had built in the U.S., a singing saw, and of course our own creations like the slapaphone. All of these come together to create a unique sound palette for each performance.

The project is inspired by Elif Shafak’s novel There Are Rivers in the Sky , a beautiful story about a single drop of water that travels through time, carrying memories and connecting cultures. This idea – that water preserves, transforms, and links us – drives everything we do in this project that I call All That Lingers.

Around Glass’s work, we commission new compositions, collaborate with writers and other artists, and explore ways to tell stories about water. It’s not just a concert: it’s also an installation, an album, and a series of online texts and interviews. In 2025 and 2026, we’ll continue creating new music, recording our version of Águas da Amazônia along with these new works.

The program is flexible. On a festival stage, we can perform just the 45-minute Águas da Amazônia. In a concert hall, it can become a full evening with installations, a rich sonic landscape, and a light design. Like water, the project adapts to each space and audience, and it continues to grow and evolve.

At a time of climate challenges, I think it’s important that we reflect on our relationship with water – what lingers, what echoes, when the source runs dry and the stream falls silent.
